Finned tube radiators are used wherever heat has to be transferred between a fluid inside a tube and air or gas outside it. The fins compensate for the low gas-side heat transfer coefficient and make the unit compact.
Where they are used
Typical duty includes space heating, drying lines, process air heating, air cooling and flue gas heat recovery. The same construction family can be adapted to steam, hot water, thermal oil, chilled water or ambient air by changing the circuit and materials.
Design choices
- Tube material: copper, stainless steel, carbon steel or ND steel
- Fin material: copper, aluminium, stainless steel or carbon steel
- Fin process: wound, sleeve-on, embedded, integral rolled, high-frequency welded or brazed
- Fin spacing and row depth selected against dust, condensation and pressure drop
Why the details matter
A radiator with the wrong fin spacing can block in a dusty stream, and a material mismatch can fail quickly in a corrosive atmosphere. The design has to start from the medium, temperature and cleaning requirement rather than from a catalogue size.
