Shell and tube heat exchangers are among the most widely used exchanger types. They handle high temperature, high pressure and a wide range of media, and the tube side and shell side can be designed separately.
Key selection parameters
- Tube side or shell side: fouling or corrosive media normally go through the tubes for easier cleaning
- Material: tube and shell materials selected against corrosion and temperature
- Velocity: too high causes erosion; too low encourages fouling
- Temperature difference and thermal stress: large differences may require expansion compensation
Construction options
Fixed tubesheet, floating head and U-tube designs cover different combinations of temperature difference, pressure and cleaning access. A floating head or U-tube unit allows the bundle to be removed; a fixed tubesheet unit is simpler and more economical for moderate duty.
When to compare with a spiral plate unit
For particle-laden, fouling or viscous media, a spiral plate exchanger may resist blockage better. The choice should be made on the medium and cleaning method, not on habit.
Mazelu manufactures pressure-bearing shell and tube exchangers and can compare both options for a project.
